Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of New Mexico
Theresa Moyers is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of New Mexico, where she specializes in the treatment of addictive behaviors. Her research program focuses on teaching counselors to use motivational interviewing (MI) in the addictions field. Along with Dr. Miller, Dr. Moyers has trained more than 150 experienced mental health counselors, physicians, nurses, social workers and psychologists at Flag Is Up Farm in the MI method. These trainings feature an emphasis on the similarities between MI and Join-Up, and include a demonstration with Monty Roberts. Dr. Moyers also trains and competes with her border collie in the sport of dog agility. She finds that the natural overlap between MI and Join-Up can be extended to the training of agility dogs and the handlers who compete with them.
Fall down seven times, stand up eight. – Japanese proverb
Dogs (and horses) LEARN FASTER with positive training. In the Sport of Dog Agility, speed is essential. Punishment, fear and pain will never achieve times as fast as positive training. We will discuss the barriers that keep trainers from embracing positive training.
